Choosing the right material involves balancing how your kitchen looks with how you actually use it, and the options available have never been more varied.

Each has genuine strengths and real limitations, and the right choice depends heavily on your household, your cooking habits, and your design priorities. Quartz: the Practical First Choice
Quartz is consistently the most popular worktop material among our clients, and it is not hard to see why. It is an engineered stone, manufactured from crushed quartz bound with resin, which means it combines the visual weight of stone with a highly consistent surface and very good practical performance.
Quartz is non-porous, which means it does not require sealing and is highly resistant to staining. It handles everyday knocks and scratches well, and the colour and pattern consistency means it is much easier to match across multiple slabs than natural stone. The surface is easy to clean and does not harbour bacteria.
The main limitation is heat. Quartz should not have hot pans placed directly on it; the resin content means prolonged direct heat can cause damage. Trivets are a sensible habit regardless of worktop material, but with quartz they are genuinely important. It is also worth noting that quartz is heavy, which affects both delivery logistics and the requirement for adequate cabinet support.

Granite: Natural Stone With Real Character
Granite has been a premium kitchen worktop material for decades, and it remains an excellent choice for clients who want genuine natural stone. Every slab is unique, with its own pattern of mineral veining and crystalline variation. If you want a worktop that is genuinely one of a kind, granite delivers that in a way engineered materials simply cannot.
In terms of performance, granite is exceptionally hard and scratch-resistant. It handles heat considerably better than quartz, making it a good choice for kitchens where pots come straight from hob to surface. It is also very durable over time; a well-maintained granite worktop can last the lifetime of the kitchen with very little deterioration.
The key maintenance requirement is sealing. Granite is a natural stone and therefore porous, which means it needs to be sealed on installation and periodically thereafter to maintain its stain resistance. This is not onerous but it is a commitment that quartz does not require. Colour and pattern matching across multiple slabs can also be less consistent than engineered alternatives, which is worth considering for larger kitchen layouts.
Dekton: Ultra-Compact Performance
Dekton is an ultra-compact surface manufactured by Cosentino, produced through a process of extreme heat and pressure that creates a material with exceptional hardness and performance characteristics. It is increasingly popular with our clients who want maximum durability alongside a distinctive aesthetic.
Dekton is highly resistant to heat, scratches, staining, and UV light. Unlike quartz, you can place a hot pan on a Dekton surface without concern. It is also resistant to frost, which makes it suitable for outdoor kitchen applications. The surface does not require sealing and is very straightforward to maintain.
The aesthetic range is broad: Dekton is available in large-format slabs with very low visible seam lines, which suits contemporary open-plan kitchen designs particularly well. It can also be cut to very fine edges, giving a different visual profile to traditional stone. The main consideration is that Dekton, while very hard, can be susceptible to chipping at edges if subjected to sharp impacts, so it benefits from slightly more robust edge profiles in high-traffic areas.

Solid Wood: Warmth With Honest Maintenance Needs
Solid wood worktops bring a warmth and natural character to a kitchen that stone and engineered materials cannot replicate. Oak, walnut, and iroko are among the most popular species. Wood is a natural partner for our British handmade kitchen ranges in particular, and works well in shaker, farmhouse, and traditional designs.
The honest truth about solid wood is that it requires more maintenance than stone alternatives. It needs to be oiled regularly, it will show marks and scratches over time, and it should not be left standing in water. Most clients who choose wood go in fully aware of this and find that the maintenance becomes a normal part of kitchen upkeep rather than an inconvenience.
Wood can also be sanded back and refinished if it becomes heavily marked over time, which is a genuine advantage over stone: if your granite chips or your quartz stains permanently, your options are more limited. A wooden worktop can be restored to a very good condition with the right treatment.
Mixing Materials: A Popular and Practical Option
Many of our clients end up combining worktop materials: stone or engineered surfaces on the main run and island, with a wooden draining section adjacent to the sink, for example. This approach can bring both aesthetic interest and practical benefit, with each material used in the zone where its properties are best suited.

Which worktop material is the most durable for a busy family kitchen?
Dekton and granite both offer exceptional durability in high-use environments. Quartz is also very practical for family kitchens, provided you use trivets for hot pans. Solid wood is a viable choice for clients who are comfortable with regular oiling and accept that it will develop character marks over time.
Is quartz better than granite?
Neither is definitively better; they suit different priorities. Quartz is lower maintenance and more consistent in appearance. Granite offers natural variation, better heat resistance, and genuine stone character. The right choice depends on how you use your kitchen and what aesthetic you are drawn to. Can Dekton be used outdoors?
Yes. Dekton’s resistance to UV light, heat, and frost makes it one of the few worktop materials genuinely suited to outdoor kitchen use. If you are planning an outdoor cooking area as part of your project, it is worth discussing this with us during the design consultation.
How thick should a kitchen worktop be?
The most common thicknesses are 20mm and 30mm for stone and engineered materials. Thicker slabs have a more substantial visual presence and are often used on islands where the worktop edge is prominent. The right choice depends on your design and budget. How long does worktop installation take once the cabinets are fitted?
Stone and engineered worktops are templated once the cabinets are in place, then fabricated off site. This typically takes seven to ten working days depending on the supplier and material.
